조엘의 홍보담당자는 조엘과 애인 알렉시스 로더릭(34)이 4일(현지시간) 미국 뉴욕 주 남동부의 롱아일랜드에서 앤드루 쿠오모 뉴욕 주지사의 주례로 결혼했다고 밝혔다.
매년 미국 독립기념일마다 파티를 열어온 조엘은 이번 파티에 결혼식 계획을 알리지 않은 채 가족과 친구를 초청해 로더릭과 깜짝 결혼 서약을 했다.
조엘과 로더릭은 2009년부터 사귀어왔으며 곧 첫 아이를 낳는다. 조엘은 이번이 네 번째 결혼이다.
결혼식에는 조엘이 두 번째 부인과 낳은 딸 알렉사 레이 조엘도 참석했다.
순회공연 중인 조엘은 지난 1일 대형 실내체육관인 매디슨스퀘어가든의 최다 단독공연 가수에 등극했다. 매디슨스퀘어가든은 미국 프로농구팀 뉴욕 닉스의 홈구장으로 그간 엘튼 존이 64회로 최다 단독공연 기록을 보유했다.
조엘은 '피아노맨'(Piano Man), '저스트 더 웨이 유아'(Just the Way You Are), '업타운 걸'(UpTown Girl), '어니스티'(Honesty) 등 무수한 히트곡으로 23차례 그래미상 후보에 올라 6차례 수상했다. (연합)

Billy Joel married girlfriend Alexis Roderick in a surprise ceremony at the couple's annual Fourth of July party.
New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo presided over Saturday's nuptials at Joel's Long Island estate, the singer's spokeswoman Claire Mercuri said. The small group of family and friends at the party didn't know the couple planned to exchange vows. Among those in attendance were Alexa Ray Joel, his daughter with his second wife, model Christie Brinkley, and actor Kevin James.
People magazine first reported the wedding.
Joel, 66, and Roderick, 34, have been dating since 2009 and are expecting their first child. This is his fourth marriage.
Joel is currently on tour. On Wednesday, he set a record for most performances by a single artist at Madison Square Garden with his 65th show, besting Elton John. (AP)
