Arrest warrant issued for aide to President Lee’s brother

A Seoul court issued an arrest warrant Saturday for an aide to President Lee Myung-bak’s brother in the latest in a string of high-profile corruption scandals.

The aide, surnamed Park, has been accused of receiving about 700 million won ($619,000) in cash and an expensive watch from two businessmen in return for his help in salvaging a troubled business group facing closure.

Park is an aide to Lee Sang-deuk, an elder brother of President Lee and a lawmaker of the ruling Grand National Party.

“There is a concern that (the aide) might flee and destroy evidence,” said Kim Hwan-soo, a judge of the Seoul Central District Court, as he issued the warrant.

One of the businessmen, Lee Kuk-chul, chairman of SLS Group, allegedly asked Park to peddle his influence so that the group could avoid undergoing a debt workout program in 2009.

Park has denied the allegations, prosecution officials said.

SLS is a mid-sized business group with 10 subsidiaries, including heavy industry and shipbuilding firms. The affiliates have either gone bankrupt or into a debt workout program since 2009 when the chairman was investigated on suspicion of bribery and other charges.

On Friday, Rep. Lee issued a public apology for poorly managing

his aide and called for a thorough investigation into the case.

The latest case comes just weeks after President Lee’s press secretary and former vice culture minister were arrested for receiving bribes from a lobbyist and the SLS chairman, respectively.

Previous governments were also plagued by corruption cases in their final years in office. President Lee’s single five-year term of office ends in February 2013 and he is barred by law from seeking re-election. (Yonhap News)

이상득 보좌관 알선수재 구속

'이국철 폭로 의혹'을 수사 중인 서울중앙지검 특수3부(심재돈 부장검사)는 10일 SLS그룹 구명로비 명목으로 수억원대 금품을 받은 혐의(특가법상 알선수재)로 이상득 의원의 보좌관 박모씨를 구속수감했다.

이날 박씨를 상대로 구속 전 피의자 심문(영장실질심사)을 벌인 서울중앙지법 김환수 영장전담부장판사는 "범죄사실이 소명됐고 증거인멸의 우려가 있다"며 구속 영장을 발부했다.

박씨는 영장실질심사를 마치고 서울구치소로 직행했으며, 영장이 발부된 직후 바로 집행됐다.

검찰에 따르면 박 보좌관은 2009년 11월 이후 SLS그룹 워크아웃 관련 청탁과 함 께 이국철(49·구속기소) SLS그룹 회장과 대영로직스 대표 문모(42·구속기소)씨에 게서 7억원 안팎의 현금과 고급시계 등을 수수한 혐의를 받고 있다.

검찰은 이 회장과 문 대표로부터 각각 5억원과 2억원 가량의 현금을 박 보좌관 에게 전달했다는 진술을 확보했으며, 금융기관 계좌추적을 통해 박씨의 관련 계좌에 거액의 뭉칫돈이 입금된 사실을 파악한 것으로 전해졌다.

검찰은 이 돈이 이 회장과 문씨로부터 받은 현금 중 일부일 것으로 보고 출처를 추궁하고 있지만 박씨는 혐의를 완강히 부인한 것으로 알려졌다.

검찰은 박씨의 신병을 확보함에 따라 박씨가 이 회장과 문씨로부터 받은 자금을 어디에 썼는지 용처를 집중적으로 추적할 계획이다.

검찰은 또 박씨가 이 회장 등의 청탁을 받고 SLS그룹이 워크아웃 되지 않도록 관련 기관 인사와 실제로 접촉했는지 행적을 조사할 방침이다.

검찰은 박씨가 돈을 받은 시점을 전후해 통화내역 등도 조회해 행적을 캐고 있 다.

검찰은 계좌추적 과정에서 박 보좌관의 자금이 의원실 다른 직원 2명의 계좌를 거쳐간 사실을 발견, 이들을 참고인 자격으로 불러 사실관계를 확인했다.

검찰은 박 보좌관이 제일저축은행 유동천 회장에게서 영업정지를 막아달라는 청 탁과 함께 수천만원을 받은 혐의도 포착했다.

검찰은 박 보좌관이 제일저축은행 영업정지를 막기 위해 금융당국 인사들을 접 촉한 정황이 있는지 살펴보고 있다.

저축은행 비리 합동수사단은 유 회장으로부터 정권 실세의 측근으로 알려진 박 보좌관에게 수천만원을 건넸다는 진술을 확보하고 박씨를 불러 조사했다.

유 회장은 이명박 대통령 부인 김윤옥 여사의 사촌 오빠인 김재홍 세방학원 이 사에게도 금품 로비를 벌였다고 진술한 것으로 전해졌다.
