Booyoung offers scholarships to foreign students

The WooJung Education and Culture Foundation under Booyoung Group offered scholarships worth a total of 400 million won ($357,000) to 100 foreign students studying in Korea, as part of its corporate social responsibility moves, the company said Thursday.
The foundation, established by Booyoung Group Chairman Lee Joong-geun in 2008, has provided scholarships to foreign students twice a year since 2010.

Since 2013, the foundation has raised the maximum scholarship amount per student to 8 million won. As of this month, nearly 1,000 students have received a total of 3.8 billion won since the foundation was established.
By nationalities, the Vietnamese benefitted the most, with 218 students receiving financial aid, followed by the Thais, Laotians and Filipinos, at 146, 125 and 120 students, respectively.
Students from Asia and Africa have especially benefitted from the scholarship program, the company said. (rene@heraldcorp.com)
