South Korean tech giant Samsung Electronics Co. said Thursday it has acquired U.S. cloud service company Joyent Inc. to cope with rising demand for cloud platform services.

Joyent, a San Francisco-based cloud provider, has come under Samsung's wing as of Wednesday (U.S. time), the South Korean tech firm said in a statement. 


Samsung's acquisition of the U.S. startup firm signals its interest in cloud computing that has become fundamental in providing users with reliable services on their mobile and other devices.

Joyent's technology will strengthen this position, while allowing the company to scale its own cloud infrastructure and services as it continues to innovate with new software and technologies, the company said.

"I am really glad about the acquisition of Joyent, which has Fortune 500 companies as clients, technology and talented personnel," said Lee In-jong, vice-chairman of Samsung's mobile communications unit.

Samsung said it will hold an entire stake in Joyent and that the company will continue to operate the business as an independent entity. Joyent was established in 2004. (Yonhap)
