The season of festivities has come around once again, with a host of festivals lined up for music lovers. The summer lineup brims with choices, ranging from electronic dance music to rock.
Heating up the summer with EDM
The Ultra Music Festival -- one of the leading EDM festivals worldwide -- has landed in Korea once again, celebrating its fifth anniversary with an exclusive three-day concert instead of the usual two. Held in Seoul, the event is expected to heat up Jamsil Olympic Stadium with excitement from June 10 to 12. Unlike many other festivals which often face an identity crisis, UMF Korea is a must-go for all EDM lovers across the nation as well as for foreign visitors, as it will feature world-class artists Avicii, Afrojack and Armin van Buuren as headliners.
Supporters of the genre are given another option to make the best of the short summer months. The annual World DJ Festival will also provide performances in the same genre, but with a refreshing theme of water added. Dubbed “WDF: Water War,” the festivity will host top acts -- BAAUER, Nero, Zomboy and others -- as well as fun-packed, water-related activities for all partygoers.
The ideal harmony of camping and indie music
Held on the island of music, Jarasum Island, the 2016 Rainbow Island Festival is set to provide the perfect getaway for those tired of the hectic city life. With friends and family, attendees of the festival can lie on the green grass and watch the stars while listening to the singers, including Zion T, 10cm, Idiotape and more. Visitors can also spend the night at the camping site, with campfires set up for an atmospheric evening. The two-day fiesta June 18-19 costs 88,000 won ($76), with a discount offered for advance bookings.
The world of rock
The Red Hot Chili Peppers, Zedd and Disclosure will headline the upcoming 2016 Jisan Valley Rock Festival. Held from July 22 through 24, the festival’s admission fee is 160,000 won for a day pass and 260,000 won for a three-day ticket. For newcomers of rock festivals, Hyukoh and Guckkasten will be among the reasons to attend.
In the “tri-port” city of Incheon, the legendary Pentaport Rock Festival will kick off its 11th run on Aug. 12. Recently finalizing its fourth official lineup announcement, the festival will feature some of Korea’s favorite musicians, including Suede, Nell and Weezer, as well as Panic! at the Disco, At the Drive-In, Grouplove and Nothing But Thieves.
