Six young Korean architects received awards for their work at a ceremony held at Dongdaemun History Culture Park in Seoul on Tuesday.

The 2013 Young Architect Awards winners were Shin Hye-won, chief of lokaldesign; Cho Jang-hee, Won Yoo-min and Ahn Hyun-hee, co-chiefs of JYArchitects; and Kim Ju-kyung and Choi Kyo-shik of Owujae Architects.

The prize winners, selected by the Korea Architects Institute, had been dedicated to redesigning neighborhoods or communal space into resident-friendly places where the rights and welfare of people were respected, the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism, the host of the awards ceremony, said.

Shin received acclaim for her open-space projects in Anyang, Gyeonggi Province and the renovation of Sajik Park in Seoul. The winners from JYArchitects were recognized for refurbishing Sannaedeul Children’s Welfare Center in Gangjin and the “Low Cost House Series” in Beolgyo, South Jeolla Province. The Owujae architects were noted for a series of construction projects on Cheongsando Island, South Jeolla Province, promoted as a “slow city.”

The Young Architect Awards were established in 2008 and the recipients are given support to participate in various seminars and architecture-related events at home and abroad for a year.
