Details of Samsung Electronics Co.’s much-anticipated smart watch were recently revealed after the South Korean tech giant registered design patents for the new gadget at the Korean Intellectual Property Office.

Documents at the KIPO showed that Samsung filed to register three design patents for its smart watch in May. The product is presumed to be named “Samsung Galaxy Gear,” which was registered at the United States Patent and Trademark Office on July 29.

The product descriptions and drawings show a flexible screen that wraps round the wrist, and other parts made of synthetic, metal and glass materials.

The device is described as a “wearable digital electronic device in the form of a wristwatch, wrist band or bangle,” according to a trademark filing with the U.S. patent agency.

Its likely features include a digital camera, health monitoring, global positioning system, television receiver, and data communication to other digital devices such as a PC and smartphones.

Notable among the possible functions of the Samsung smart watch is an app that allows users to check who the caller is on their watches without pulling out their smartphones. According to the BBC, 14 percent of those questioned said they are very interested in such a function.

Samsung has yet to confirm a launch date for the Galaxy Gear, but it is rumored to unveil the product at IFA Berlin 2013 next month along with other new Samsung products such as the Galaxy Note 3.
