2013년 충무로 최고 기대작인 “설국열차”와 흥행 보증 수표 하정우의 “더 테러 라이브”가 개봉일을 차례로 수요일로 옮기면서 이들의 극장가 맞대결은 피할 수 없게 되었다.

개봉 첫날, 봉준호 감독의 “설국열차”가 박스오피스 예매율 66%를 기록하면서, 첫 라운드는 “설국열차”의 대승이었으며 2위를 기록한 “더 테러 라이브”는 약 11%를 기록하면서 1위와 큰 차이를 보였다.

어쩌면 한국 영화 사상 최고의 제작비인 430억이 투자된 “설국열차”의 선방은 할리우드 배우 크리스 에반스와 틸다 스윈튼의 가세까지 고려하면 그리 놀랍지 않은 일이다. 개봉 전부터 수많은 화제를 낳으며 완성해 온 글로벌 프로젝트이기에 초반에 관객이 몰리는 것은 당연한 일이다.


반면, 신예 감독 김병우의 첫 상업 영화 “더 테러 라이브”는 경쟁작의 10분의 1밖에 되지 않는 제작비와 길지 않은 홍보 기간을 가졌지만 이들에겐 하정우라는 강력한 비밀 병기가 있다.

여태껏 “추격자”를 시작으로 “국가대표” “의뢰인” “범죄와의 전쟁: 나쁜놈들 전성시대” 그리고 “베를린”를 통해 “실패를 모르는 배우”라는 수식어를 획득한 하정우를 단독주연으로 내놓은 것만으로도 관객들을 끌어들이기에 충분하다.

배우 하정우는 총 러닝타임의 95%에 출연한다는 사실에 대한 부담감과 관객들이 “내 얼굴만 보다 질리면 어떡하나”라는 고민까지 했지만, 그의 전작에 만족한 팬이라면 오히려 이것은 영화를 봐야 하는 또 하나의 강력한 이유로 작용할 것이다. 하정우의 “원 맨 쇼”라 해도 과언이 아닐 “더 테러 라이브”에서 그가 보일 또 하나의 “소름 끼치는 연기”는 어떤 것일지 기대 되지 않을 수 없다.

일단, 개봉 첫날 기선제압을 한 것은 “설국열차”였다. 영화에 대한 국내외 언론의 관심과 관객들의 티켓 구매 양상을 보았을 때 이 기세는 적어도 2주 동안은 지속될 것으로 보인다. 하지만 “더 테러 라이브”의 뒷심도 기대해 볼만 한다. 탄탄한 내용 구성과 하정우 원탑 체제가 자아낼 입 소문에 의해 영화가 롱런할 수 있는지는 두고 봐야 할 것이다.

Bong Joon-ho’s ‘Snowpiercer’ hits screens in Korea

Another promising Korean flick, ‘The Terror Live,’ to feature Ha Jung-woo’s talent

Bong Joon-ho’s much-anticipated sci-fi thriller “Snowpiercer” hit local theaters on Wednesday amid growing expectations from moviegoers. Adding another dramatic element is the release of “The Terror Live,” also a promising flick starring top-performing actor Ha Jung-woo.

Attention was placed on which Korean movie would be the box-office winner in the coming weeks -- a period during which many Koreans flock to air-conditioned multiplex cinemas to beat the heat.

The initial winner is Bong’s “Snowpiercer,” which took up a whopping 66.6 percent share of box-office ticket sales on its first day of release. “The Terror Live” tagged along at a distance with only an 11.1 percent share.

Bong’s lead, however, comes as no big surprise for the film has been generously exposed to the media, highlighting its $43 billion production budget and the star-studded cast of Tilda Swinton, Chris Evans and Octavia Spencer, not to mention Song Gang-ho and Go Ah-sung, both of whom have starred in Bong’s previous films.

In contrast, “The Terror Live” spent less than a tenth of the “Snowpiercer” production budget. Director Kim Byung-woo, who built up his career with indie and art house flicks, also makes a big-screen debut. 

Kim’s key strategy lies in the performance of Ha Jung-woo, an actor with a meaningful fan-base that could translate into sizable box-office revenue. Even though Ha’s commercial potential is widely recognized, he was modest about his role: “The audience might get tired of seeing my face.” 

Ha’s die-hard fans would love to see his face -- as well as acting -- again in the new film, especially those who witnessed his shining talent in “Yellow Sea,” “The Murderer” and “The Berlin File.” 

Instead of predicting which Korean film would dominate the summertime cinema, Ha’s fans seem eager to see how “The Terror Live” could extend its box-office life against the behemoth led by Bong.
