36년 역사의 MBC ‘대학가요제’가 폐지 수순을 밟고 있는 것으로 알려졌다.

2일 복수의 MBC 관계자에 따르면 올해부터 ‘대학가요제’ 무대를 볼 수 없을 전망이다.

‘대학가요제’는 그간 신인 가수의 등용문이자 젊은이들의 축제로 큰 사랑을 받았다. 특히 대학가요제는 배철수, 임백천, 노사연, 유열, 신해철, 015B, 전람회(김동률) 등 실력파 가수들을 배출하기도 했다.

그러나 신인 가수의 등용문 역할을 하던 ‘대학가요제’는 최근 수많은 오디션 프로그램이 제작되면서 그 위상이 약해졌다. 또한 최근 10년 가까이 기억에 남는 가수를 배출하지 못하며 폐지설이 돌기도 했다.

‘대학가요제’ 폐지 소식에 누리꾼들은 “대학가요제 폐지, 안타깝다”, “대학가요제 폐지, 추억의 대학가요제를 더이상 볼 수 없다니”, “대학가요제 폐지, 오디션프로그램 이상의 뭔가가 있었는데 아쉽다”는 등의 반응을 보였다. (헤럴드생생뉴스)

MBC to drop its college music competition

South Korean broadcast network MBC said on Tuesday it will discontinue its time-honored college music competition, citing its declining viewer ratings. 

“College Musicians Festival” started in 1977 and has been deemed the representative program through which amateur musicians often made a high-profile debut thanks to the national broadcast network’s influence. 

MBC said the program’s popularity and the viewer ratings were relatively low compared to the high production cost. The network said that idol singers trained by big production companies are taking over the music scene, making it hard for the program’s winner to set foot in the industry.

For the past 36 years, the program has played the role of providing a crucial gateway for talented musicians to become professional singers -- similar to audition programs gaining much popularity in recent years. 

The program helped propel musicians such as Bae Cheol-soo, Shim Soo-bong and Sin Hye-cheol to instant stardom.
