많은 의과대학생들이 인턴제 폐지시기에 관련한 정부의 불분명한 입장 표명과 관련해 답답함을 토로하고 있다. 

보건복지부는 지난 1월 2015년까지 인턴제를 폐지하겠다고 선언했지만 의료계의 거센 반대에 부딛쳐 시기가 조정될 수 있다고 최근 입장을 바꾼 바 있다. 

대한 의과대학/의학전문대학원 학생협회에서 올해 초 실시한 설문조사에 따르면 인턴제 폐지를 2018년 이후로 꼽은 의대생이 73 퍼센트에 이르렀다. 이들은 2015년의 인턴폐지는 시기상조고 정부가 변화로 인해 피해를 보게 될 학생들에 대한 지구책 마련이 되어있지 않다고 말했다.

미확정된 인턴제 폐지시기는 보건복지부의 결정에 따라 미래가 크게 좌우되는 고학년 의과대학생들 사이에 혼란을 불러일으키고 있다.

울산대학교 의과대학에 재학중인 김 군은 "인턴제 폐지가 2015년인지 2018년인지 모르는 상태에서 졸업 후 군복무를 먼저 해야하는지 모르겠다. 2015년에 폐지되면 군복무 중 인턴제도가 없어져 바로 수련의 과정으로 갈 수 있는데 인턴제도가 없어지지 않으면 굳이 일찍 군복무를 해야 할 필요가 없기 때문" 이라고 언급했다.

보건복지부는 2010년부터 비효율적인 인턴제도 폐지를 논의해왔다. 본 취지와는 달리 인턴제도는 많은 수련의들에게 잡무와 고강도의 노동시간만을 남겨주었다는 비판에 직면하고 있다. (코리아헤럴드)

Changes in internship program puzzle Med students

South Korea’s medical students are expressing frustration at the government’s unclear stance on the fate of medical internships, calling for a quicker decision.

The Ministry of Health and Welfare announced in January that medical internship program would be shut down in 2015. However, it recently left room for a change in that schedule, saying the date may be pushed back to 2018 since its decision drew much criticism from the medical community.

According to the survey conducted by the Korean Medical Student Association early this year, some 73 percent of respondents were against the decision to end the internship program in 2015. They said the date was too close and that the ministry had not made adequate preparations.

The possible change in schedule is adding to confusion among the upper grade medical students whose future heavily rests on the ministry’s decision.

“I wonder if I should first serve the military or apply for the internship program next year,” said a medical school student in his final year at Yonsei University who refused to give his name. “When I heard the internship program would close in 2015, I decided to serve the military first, but if the date should be postponed, I can’t help but to change my schedule.”

The Health Ministry has been working on the termination of the internship program since 2010, citing inefficiency and extra burden on medical school students.
