Hacktivist group Anonymous staged another round of online attacks against the North Korean regime’s websites from Sunday morning, closing down those for public organizations and companies run by the regime.
The group reportedly used DDos (Distribute Denial of Service) in their online hacking operation named “OpNorthKorea.”
Some of the group’s members posted notifications through their Twitter accounts in advance that Anonymous would launch the operation at 1:00 a.m. (GMT) on May 12, which was 10 a.m. local time.
The twitter account “@AnonyOpsKorea” also released the targets and tools for the online attacks minutes before, encouraging its members to be prepared for the imminent operations.
It kept tweeting on the progress of the operation.
“KEEP FIRE KEEP FIRE .... NorthKorea does not exist,” said the Anonymous group on its Twitter account.
Around 50 websites of government organizations, propaganda groups, broadcasters, and private companies including the Korean Central News Agency, Rodong Sinmun, Pyeonghwa Motors, and Koryo Tours were targeted.
The websites of the Korean Central News Agency, Rodong Sinmun, Koryo Tours were confirmed to have been shut down since the launch of the attacks.
“This Attack is very small operation. It will be very huge op on 6/25.” Anonymous said.
The Korean War broke out on the day in 1950.
In a series of online attacks against the North Korean regime from earlier this year, Anonymous members disclosed the personal information of thousands of registered members of North Korean websites, triggering an investigation by authorities to verify whether illegal pro-North Korean campaigns had been run by the members.
