A group of Korean students led by a professor have hung posters calling for a sincere apology for Korean sex slaves during World War II on the walls of major universities in Japan.

Seo Kyoung-duk, a professor in Sungshin Women’s University in Korea, and Korean students studying in Japan hung the posters in about 40 universities including Tokyo University, Kyoto University and Osaka University. They hung 10,000 posters over three weeks, Seo said.

There are two different kinds of poster. One says “Do you hear?” and another says “Do you remember?“ The poster “Do you remember?” contains a picture of Willy Brandt, the German minister, kneeling down and apologizing to the Polish for the Nazi transgressions.

The poster reads in English, “The apology of Willy Brandt in 1971 contributed a lot to the peace in Europe. Now in 2012, the old Korean women who were Japan’s sex slaves are still waiting for the country’s sincere apology.”

The advert was carried in the New York Times in May. Since the beginning of this month it has been a billboard advertisement in Time Square in New York.

The poster “Do you hear” showing a rally held by the women, was carried in the Wall Street Journal.

Seo said, “I wanted to communicate with young Japanese students and form public opinion instead of talking to the senseless Japanese government.” He added “The young people’s public opinion in the world is especially important. We plan to distribute the posters in Europe and the U.S. too.”

“...기억하십니까?” 일본서 위안부 광고

성신여대 서경덕 교수와 일본 거주 한국인 유학생들이 일본 대학 40여곳에 위안부 포스터를 게시했다. 3주에 걸쳐 도쿄대, 교토대, 오사카대 등에 1만 여 장의 포스터를 붙였다.

지난 5월 뉴욕타임즈(New York Times) 광고판에 실린 해당 포스터는 이 달 초부터 뉴욕의 타임스퀘어의 대형 전광판에 게시되어 있다.

또 다른 포스터에는 일본 대사관 앞에서 수요집회를 여는 위안부 여성들의 모습이 담겨있다. 이 역시 월스트리트저널(Wall Street Journal)에 실린 바 있다.

서 교수는 “젊은 일본 학생들이랑 소통하고 여론을 조성하고 싶었어요. 상식이 통하지 않는 일본 정부와 상대하기보다 말이죠. 전 세계 젊은이들의 여론을 일으키는 것이 특히 중요합니다. 유럽과 미국에도 포스터를 배포할 예정이에요.”라고 말했다. (코리아헤럴드)
