A group of students at a private educational institute have been infected with tuberculosis, and health authorities are investigating the possible spread of the disease.
The Korea Center for Disease Control and Prevention confirmed Monday that six students at a cram school for college entrance in Mokdong, western Seoul, had been infected with TB, and that 14 others with latent TB are undergoing further tests.
The health authority has isolated the 20 patients and expanded the testing to other students and staff at the institute as well as their families.
The number of the infected people could increase, the authorities said.
“Some of the students whose TB test were negative are still going to the cram school as the entrance test for university is approaching,” an official said.
In April, 15 students at a high school in Gyeonggi Province were infected with the disease and around 80 other students were infected by latent tuberculosis.
In May, four high school students in the same province were confirmed to have been infected with the disease and 200 had inactive tuberculosis.
Tuberculosis usually attacks the lungs, but also can affect almost any part of the body. It is spread through the air when people who have an active TB infection cough, sneeze or otherwise transmit their saliva through the air.

입시학원서 전염병 비상, 피해 속출
서울 양천구의 한 입시학원에서 결핵 환자 수십명이 집단 발병해 보건 당국이 조사에 나섰다.
27일 양천구 보건소에 따르면 지난 주말 현재 양천구 소재 J학원 원생과 교직원 145명 중 20여명이 결핵 객담검사(도말)에서 양성 판정을 받았다.
이유진 양천구보건소장은 “지난 21일께부터 이 학원 원생들 사이에 집단 발병 조짐이 나타났다”고 말했다.
질병관리본부 관계자는 “이달 초 같은 의료기관에서 2명의 또래 환자가 결핵으로 확진, 보건소에 신고됐다”며 “전염을 의심해 조사한 결과 지난 3월 결핵을 앓았던 환자가 발견됐다”고 말했다.
보건당국은 양성 판정을 받은 학생과 교직원을 가택 격리 조치하는 한편 원생과 교직원의 가족으로 검사 대상을 확대했다.
이날 안으로 관내 병원 2곳으로부터 추가 검사 결과가 나오면 감염자수는 더 늘어날 것으로 예상된다.
이 소장은 “감염자와 접촉 가능성이 있는 원생과 교직원 전체를 대상으로 외출을 자제하라고 당부했지만 입시가 임박한 가운데 음성 판정을 받은 일부는 여전히 학원에 나오고 있다”고 전했다.
앞서 지난 5월에는 경기도의 한 외고에서 결핵이 집단 발병하는 등 단체생활을 하는 청소년과 청년층의 결핵 집단 감염사례가 잇따르고 있다.
