Saudi Arabia will construct an all-female city in purpose of providing work for women, according to local news reports.

The ultra-conservative kingdom’s Industrial Property Authority (Modon) reportedly will build the city in the eastern city of Hafuf. The new city is anticipated to create around 5,000 jobs in various industries.

Saudi Arabia is hoping the new city will encourage more women to work without violating the country’s Islamic law of Sharia. While the law does not ban female labor, it emphasizes the importance of housekeeping and caring for the families over working.

“I’m sure that women can demonstrate their efficiency in many aspects and clarify the industries that best suit their interests, their nature and their ability,” Modon’s acting director-general, Saleh Al-Rasheed, told Saudi daily al-Eqtisadiah.

He said that Saudi Arabia was planning to establish several industries that are run exclusively by women, adding that it is already working on a second women-only industrial city.

The move is expected to significantly raise the percentage of working women in the country, which pan-Arabic news broadcast Al Arabiya reported to be 14.4 percent. While it is a huge leap from 5.4 percent in 1992, it is among the lowest in the region.

The status of women in the Gulf kingdom is notoriously low. Only last year, a law allowing women to vote in local elections was passed, and the country still prohibits women from driving.

Furthermore, when judoka Wojdan Shaherkani and runner Sarah Attar became Saudi Arabia’s first-ever female athletes to participate in the Olympics in 2012 London games, their feat was met with cold indifference and harsh criticism.

An editor of the English-language Saudi Gazette said his paper was the only newspaper to write about the accomplishments of these two brave women, and some bitter Twitter users started an online campaign with the hashtag “prostitutes of the Olympics,” to degrade the athletes.

사우디 아라비아가 여자들만 거주하는 산업도시를 건설하겠다고 밝혀 화제가 되고 있다.

산업자원당국의 국장 대행인 살레 알 라쉬드는 사우디 일간지 알엑티사디아와의 인터뷰에서 “(신도시 건설로 인해) 여성들이 여러 분야에서 그들의 유능함을 보여주고 그들의 관심이나 기질, 능력 등과 가장 맞는 산업분야를 찾아낼 수 있을 거라고 봅니다”라고 말했다.

그는 또한 이러한 여성전용 산업 지역을 여러 곳 만들 예정이며, 벌써 두 번째 ‘여성전용’ 산업도시를 만들고 있다고 밝혔다.

사우디 아라비아는 이번 신도시 건설로 인해 14.4%에 불과한 여성 채용률을 크게 늘릴 수 있을 것으로 기대하고 있다. 사우디 아라비아의 여성 채용률은 20년전 5.4%에 비하면 크게 증가했지만 여전히 인근 지역에서 가장 낮은 축에 속한다.

사우디 아라비아는 여성의 지위가 낮기로 악명 높은데, 여성들이 자동차를 운전하는 것조차 법으로 금지되어 있고, 작년에 와서야 겨우 투표권을 얻은 실정이다.

심지어 이번 2012년 런던 올림픽 당시 사상 최초로 올림픽에 출전한 여성이 된 유도선수 워잔 샤히르카니와 달리기 선수 사라 아타르의 경우 영웅 대접은커녕 비아냥과 무관심에 시달려야 했다.

그들의 위업을 보도한 매체는 영문판 신문 사우디 가제트뿐이었으며, 심지어 일부 트위터 이용자들은 “올림픽의 매춘부들”이라는 해쉬태그를 붙여 그들을 비난하는 운동을 펼칠 정도였다. (코리아헤럴드)
