LONDON (Yonhap News) -- The 2012 London Summer Olympics kicked off here Friday with a lavish opening ceremony celebrating Britain's rich history and great figures, by turns dramatic, imaginative, humorous and solemn.
With light rain falling early on at the Olympic Stadium, London began its third Summer Olympics with the ceremony titled "Isles of Wonder," as thousands of performers weaved the story of the country's past, present and future before the 80,000 capacity crowd at the Olympic Stadium. The celebration started at 9 p.m. Friday, local time, and lasted until almost 1 a.m. Saturday.
The ringing of the Olympic Bell signaled the end of the countdown and the start of the ceremony. The four nations that make up the United Kingdom -- England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland -- were represented in the opening scene, titled "Green and Pleasant Land." Bradley Wiggins, who recently became the first British rider to win the Tour de France, rang the giant bell.
British actor Kenneth Branagh then recited a quote from "The Tempest," the William Shakespeare play from which Danny Boyle, Oscar-winning filmmaker and artistic director of the ceremony, drew his inspiration. The section titled "Pandemonium" celebrated Britain's role as the birthplace of the Industrial Revolution.
Queen Elizabeth II, accompanied by her husband, the Duke of Edinburgh, entered the Olympic Stadium, but not before playing herself in a short film shot in Buckingham Palace alongside Daniel Craig as James Bond and having her stunt double parachute from a helicopter above the stadium.
In "Interlude," the London Symphony Orchestra, conducted by Simon Rattle, paid tribute to the film "Chariots of Fire," an Academy-winning movie about two track athletes at the 1924 Olympics.
Rowan Atkinson, well-recognized for his turn as Mr. Bean, provided the comic relief in his surprise cameo appearance, first as a keyboard player on the orchestra on stage and later on the giant screens up the stadium's roof as he was shown dreaming that he was part of the iconic beach-running sequence in "Chariots of Fire."
The ceremony turned to pop culture in "Frankie & June Say...Thanks Tim," in tribute to British scientist Tim Berners-Lee, the inventor of the World Wide Web. The Beatles, The Rolling Stones, Led Zeppelin, Sex Pistols, Eric Clapton, Queen, Eurythmics, The Who, The Prodigy and Blur were among famed British musicians from different generations featured during the 20-minute segment for a crash course on British music history.
Greece, the birthplace of the Olympics, started off the athletes' parade, followed by countries in alphabetical order. Britain, as the host, wrapped up the march. Even more British songs, including "Heroes" by David Bowie and "Rolling in the Deep" by Adele, were played during the parade.
"Let the Games Begin" segment followed, with Sebastian Coe, former Olympic track champion and head of the organizing committee, and Jacques Rogge, the president of the International Olympic Committee (IOC), talking about the legacy of London,
"The Olympics brings together the people of the world in harmony and friendship and in peace to celebrate what is best about mankind," Coe said. "There is a truth to sport, a purity, a drama, an intensity, a spirit that makes it irresistible to take part in and irresistible to watch. London 2012 seeks to capture all of this."
Queen Elizabeth II officially declared the Olympics open, and British taekwondo star Sarah Stevenson took the Olympic Oath for all athletes.
Also during the segment, Ban Ki-moon, the South Korean-born secretary-general of the United Nations, served as one of nine flagbearers for the Olympic Flag, bearing the five interlocking rings to signify the five inhabited continents of the world.
The nearly four-hour ceremony culminated with the lighting of the Olympic Cauldron. Steve Redgrave, former Olympic champion in rowing, carried the flame into the Olympic Stadium, and passed it over to seven young British athletes in dark track suits. They ran together around the track and approached the Cauldron together to light it.
Paul McCartney, former member of The Beatles, took the stage for the closing moments with the chart-topping Beatles tune "Hey Jude." The crowd chanted along to the popular "na-na-na-na" chorus as the ceremony came to the grand finale.
London, the first city to host three Summer Games after 1908 and 1948, will be home to some 10,000 athletes from 205 countries until Aug. 12. They will vie for 302 gold medals in 26 sports.
Under the slogan "Inspire a Generation," this year's Olympics will also be recorded as the first in which all participating nations will have female athletes, as Brunei, Qatar and Saudi Arabia have included women for the first time, Qatar has named female shooter Bahiya al-Hamad as its flag bearer.
For South Korea, the 100th nation to enter the stadium, Yoon Kyung-shin, a male handball star competing in his fifth Olympics, carried the national flag. It had 72 athletes and officials marching in from eight sports, including handball, swimming, fencing and weightlifting.
London represents a historic ground for South Korea. The 1948 London Games were the first Olympics in which South Korean participated under its own flag, after gaining independence three years earlier from Japan. South Korea claimed two bronze medals, one each in weightlifting and boxing, 64 years ago.
South Korea has since grown into a global sports power and has ranked among the top 10 in six of the past seven Summer Olympics medal standings. It has excelled in archery, judo, wrestling and taekwondo, and has recently snatched titles in weightlifting, badminton and swimming.
The country is off to a rousing start. Earlier Friday, male archer Im Dong-hyun shot a world record 699 in the ranking round to break his own 72-arrow standard, and the trio of Im, Kim Bub-min and Oh Jin-hyek combined for the 216-arrow team world record of 2,087 points.

17일간 지구촌을 감동과 환희로 뜨겁게 달굴 제30회 런던하계올림픽이 28일 새벽(한국시간) 영국 런던 북동부 리밸리의 올림픽 스타디움에서 화려한 막을 올렸다.
70일간 약 8천 명 주자의 손을 거쳐 1만5천㎞를 달려온 성화가 밤하늘에 타오르면서 런던은 1908년과 1948년에 이어 국제올림픽위원회(IOC) 역사상 처음으로 세 번이나 올림픽을 개최하는 도시가 됐다.
올림픽이 끝나고 나면 오는 8월29일부터 9월9일까지 장애인 스포츠 대제전인 제14회 패럴림픽도 런던에서 열린다.
이날 올림픽 개막식 행사를 위해 런던 대회 조직위원회는 2천700만 파운드(480억원)를 들였다.
아카데미 8개 부문 수상작 '슬럼독 밀리어네어'를 연출한 대니 보일 감독이 행사를 총지휘했다.
보일 감독은 '경이로운 영국(Isles of Wonder)'을 주제로 산업화의 진통에서 벗어나 미래를 바라보는 농촌의 이야기를 그렸다.
올림픽 스타디움은 영국의 전통 마을로 꾸며졌다. 녹색 평원과 강줄기가 흐르는 전원 마을의 모습이 한 편의 풍경화처럼 펼쳐졌다.
개막식은 어린이들의 초읽기에 이어 23t 무게의 '올림픽 종'을 울리며 시작됐다.
영국 여왕 엘리자베스 2세와 남편 필립공이 자크 로게 IOC 위원장과 함께 8만 관중의 박수를 받으며 올림픽스타디움에 모습을 드러냈다.
영국 국기인 '유니언잭'이 게양되고, 영국 국가인 '신이시여 여왕을 보호하소서'가 연주된 뒤 40여 분간 공연이 펼쳐졌다.
이후 각국 선수단이 입장했다.
관례에 따라 올림픽 발상지인 그리스의 선수단이 가장 먼저 입장하고, 나머지 국가는 알파벳 순서로 뒤를 이었다.
우리나라는 태평양 중부의 섬나라 키리바시에 이어 100번째로 입장했다.
한국 선수단은 핸드볼·수영·펜싱 등 8개 종목 선수 44명을 포함해 본부 임원 22명, 코치 6명 등 총 72명이 개막식에 참석했다.
다섯 번째 올림픽에 출전하는 핸드볼 스타 윤경신이 태극기를 들고 우리 선수단 맨 앞에 섰다.
북한 선수단은 대형 인공기를 펼쳐들고 53번째로 경기장에 들어섰다. 기수는 남자 마라톤의 박성철이 맡았다.
개최국 영국 선수단이 마지막으로 경기장을 채웠다.
선수단이 모두 스타디움에 자리를 잡자 세바스찬 코 런던올림픽조직위원장의 개회사, 로게 IOC위원장의 환영사가 이어졌다.
엘리자베스 여왕이 대회 개회 선언을 하자 오색 불꽃이 경기장을 휘감으며 4년을 기다린 지구촌 스포츠잔치의 시작을 알렸다.
반기문 유엔 사무총장 등 8명에 위해 올림픽 기가 옮겨져 게양되고, 런던 심포니 오케스트라가 연주한 올림픽 찬가가 스타디움에 울려 퍼졌다.
파킨슨병을 앓아 거동이 불편한 미국의 전설적인 복서 무하마드 알리는 직접 올림픽 기를 운반하지는 못했지만 게양대 옆에 서서 깃발에 손을 올리는 모습만으로도 진한 감동을 줬다.
영국의 여자 태권도 선수 사라 스티븐슨, 복싱 심판 미크 바시, 카누 코치 에릭 바렐이 각각 선수·심판·지도자 대표로 공정한 경쟁을 다짐하는 선서문을 낭독했다.
이후 2016년 리우 데 자네이르 올림픽에서 활약할 10대 유망주 7명에 의해 성화가 점화됐다.
대미를 장식한 비틀스 멤버 폴 매카트니의 공연과 함께 불꽃이 런던 밤하늘을 수놓으며 3시간 30여분 간 진행된 개막식은 모두 끝났다.
런던올림픽의 공식 슬로건은 '하나의 삶(Live As One)', 모토는 '세대에게 영감을(Inspire a Generation)'이다. 마스코트는 금속성 소재로 된 가상의 캐릭터 웬록(Wenlock)이다.
이번 대회에는 전 세계 205개 나라에서 선수 1만490명을 포함한 1만6천 여명의 선수단이 참가한다.
올림픽 사상 처음으로 모든 참가국에서 여성 선수가 출전한다.
그동안 여성 선수를 내보내지 않았던 카타르, 브루나이에 이어 마지막으로 사우디아라비아까지 '금녀(禁女)의 벽'을 허물어 올림픽 역사의 한 페이지를 새로 썼다.
각국 대표 선수들은 26개 종목에서 총 302개의 금메달을 놓고 기량을 겨룬다.
2008년 베이징 대회 때 정식 종목이었던 야구와 소프트볼이 이번 대회에서는 빠졌다.
복싱에서 여자 3개 체급이 추가되고 남자 페더급이 제외돼 전체 금메달 수는 베이징 올림픽과 똑같다.
한국은 64년 만에 다시 런던을 찾았다.
우리나라가 광복 이후 처음으로 태극기를 앞세워 입장한 올림픽이 1948년 런던대회였다.
그래서 한국 선수단의 이번 대회 콘셉트도 'From London To London(1948-2012·런던에서 런던으로)'이다.
농구, 테니스, 승마, 카누를 제외한 22개 종목에 출전하는 한국 선수단은 245명의 선수 등 총 374명으로 꾸려졌다.
우리나라의 이번 대회 목표는 금메달 10개 이상을 따내 종합 순위 10위 안에 든다는, 이른바 '10-10'이다.
양궁, 배드민턴, 유도, 태권도 등 전통적 강세 종목과 사격, 수영, 역도, 펜싱, 체조 등 최근 국제대회에서 경쟁력을 보여준 종목에서 금메달을 기대하고 있다.
한국 올림픽 도전사에서 통산 100번째 금메달의 주인공도 이번 대회에서 탄생할 전망이다.
1976년 몬트리올 올림픽에서 레슬링의 양정모가 딴 해방 이후 첫 금메달을 시작으로 한국은 2010 밴쿠버 동계 올림픽까지 14차례의 동·하계올림픽에서 모두 91개의 금메달을 챙겼다.
이번 대회 목표인 금메달 10개를 획득하면 자연스럽게 통산 100번째 금메달리스트도 볼 수 있다. (런던=연합뉴스)
