A meteor streaking across the sky in Northern California Sunday caused a sonic boom heard by a number of people, the National Weather Service said.
Meteorologist Craig Shoemaker said the loud bang heard across a wide area of the Sierra Nevada mountains originated with the Lyrid meteor shower, an annual phenomenon caused by debris from Comet Thatcher, which passes Earth every year.
The event occurred at 8:30 a.m. PDT and sparked calls to police agencies in at least three counties, the Sacramento Bee said.
“It went on for a while,” Georgann Wilmont, who lives in the mountains near Sutter Creek, told the Bee. “We heard one big one and then there other rumblings. At first I thought maybe it was an earthquake.” (UPI)

대낮에 정체불명 굉음, 도시민 발칵
지난 일요일 오전 미국 캘리포니아 북부 지역에서 정체 모를 폭발음이 지속돼 주민들을 놀라게 했다고 미국 기상청이 밝혔다.
오전 8시 20분 께 시에라네바다산맥에 울려퍼진 굉음 대해서 기상학자 크레이그 슈메이커(Craig Shoemaker)는 매년 4월 중순쯤 거문고자리 ‘대처 혜성(Comet Thatcher)’으로부터 쏟아지는 유성우의 잔해에서 발생했을 것이라고 설명했다. 대처 혜성은 1년에 한번 지구를 지나가면서 이 같은 현상이 벌어진다고 한다.
약 3개 주에서 굉음 신고가 경찰에 접수되었다고 현지신문이 보도했다.
아마도르카운티 서터 크리크 주민 윌몬트 씨는 “굉음이 한동안 지속되었다. ‘쾅’하는 엄청난폭발음이 나더니 굉음소리가 들렸다. 처음에는 지진 때문인 줄 알았다.”고 말했다.
