[THE INVESTOR] SK hynix unveiled new memory storage systems, the universal flash storage 2.1 and nonvolatile DIMM, at the Intel Developer Forum 2016, an annual conference of the chip industry in San Francisco, the company said on Aug. 17.

The UFS 2.1 memory chip, based on 3-D NAND flash memory and controller technologies, comes in 32, 64 and 128 gigabytes and is used for mobile devices, including smartphones.

The NVDIMM is used for data servers.




The Pangyo-headquartered chipmaker said it recently started to mass produce the storage systems and that the UFS 2.1 boasts optimal compatibility with up-to-date mobile application processors.

The UFS 2.1 is reportedly installed in Samsung Electronics’ Galaxy Note 7 smartphone and it is expected to be fitted in Apple’s next iPhones.

“Users of smartphones sporting SK hynix’s UFS 2.1 will be able to enjoy 8K and 360-degree videos without glitches,” said Choi Soo-hwan, head of the firm’s NAND flash product planning office.

The NVDIMM, built on the DRAM and NAND technologies, does not lose data when the power is off and processes data in a much faster and safer manner, compared to the existing storage technology for data servers, according to the firm.

The data server memory comes in 16GB, but the chipmaker said it would soon complete the development of a 32GB NVDIMM chip.
