SAN DIEGO (AFP) ― Torrey Pines, where Tiger Woods won the most recent of his 14 major titles, has been selected to host the 2021 U.S. Open golf championship pending city approval, according to reports Tuesday.

The San Diego Union-Tribune newspaper’s website and Golf Channel reported that the course, which hosts the U.S. PGA Tour’s $6.1 million Farmers Insurance Open each January, has been invited by the U.S. Golf Association to host the 2021 event, the next U.S. Open without a named host course.

But the deal is contingent upon the San Diego City Council approving the deal, which is expected to be considered next Monday or Tuesday.

Torrey Pines hosted the 2008 U.S. Open and Woods, the world number one who is chasing the record 18 career major titles won by Jack Nicklaus, limped through an 18-hole playoff on a broken leg to defeat Rocco Mediate to win the event.

Woods has won eight times in his career at Torrey Pines, seven of them U.S. PGA titles. He would be 45 years old at the 2021 U.S. Open.

Phil Mickelson, the reigning British Open champion who needs a U.S. Open win to complete a career Grand Slam, has finished second in the event a record six times. The San Diego resident would be turning 51 around the time of the 2021 U.S. Open.

San Diego Mayor Kevin Faulconer told the newspaper that a motion to support the 2021 U.S. Open at Torrey Pines would be on the council agenda.

“It’s a great win,” he said. “The fact we have been selected again speaks volumes as to how this city came together and put on a world-class tournament in ’08.”

“We had a fabulous Open there,” USGA president Tom O’Toole told the newspaper. “The city was great and the community was incredibly supportive.”

This year’s U.S. Open will be June 12-15 at Pinehurst, North Carolina. The U.S. Open will be staged at Chambers Bay in 2015, Oakmont in 2016, Erin Hills in 2017, Shinnecock in 2018, Pebble Beach in 2019 and Winged Foot in 2020.
