이탈리아의 슈퍼카메이커 람보르기니와 세계적인 F1 레이싱팀인 윌리엄스1이 인천 영종도에 럭셔리한 레이싱클럽을 설립한다.

이 프로젝트를 추진중인 영국계 투자회사 웨인그로우파트너스에 따르면 최대 10억 달러 (약 1조)가 레이스트랙과 함께 7성급 호텔, 세계최대규모의 자동차 박물관 등의 건립에 투자된다.

부지매입과 인허가절차 등을 거쳐 2014년 착공에 들어가고 2016년에 오픈 예정이다.

회원으로 등록하면 레이싱카는 물론 람보르니기니의 슈퍼카들을 몰고 F1트랙을 달릴 수 있고 본사에서 파견된 스탭들로터 트레이닝을 받을 수도 있다.
동북아시아 지역에 현재 약 73,000명의 슈퍼카 소유자가 있는 것을 감안하면 연간 방문객 수는 2016년 2만4,000명에서 2022년 3만8,400명까지 늘어날 것으로 기대하고 있다.

클럽회원은 중국인 35%, 일본 20%, 홍콩과 한국을 각 10% 구성할 계획으로 관계자에 따르면 초기 멤버는 200명으로 시작해 최대 천여명이 될 것으로 예상된다.

"중국, 일본 등도 고려했지만 국제공항이 가까이에 있으면서 충분한 부지를 확보할 수 있는 영종도가 가장 완벽했다. 물론 한국의 세련된 인프라시설과 서비스수준도 중요한 요인이었다,"는 것이 아키스 스타크 웨인그로우 한국대표의 설명이다.

BMW그룹 역시 다음달 영종도에 레이싱센터 착공에 들어간다. 생산공장을 갖고 있는 독일과 미국 이외의 나라에 BMW레이싱센터가 생기는 것은 처음이다.

Incheon to host luxury racing center for Asian superrich

A luxury racing center, mainly targeting the superrich in Asia, will be established on Yeongjong Island, Incheon, in partnership with the Italian sports car manufacturer Lamborghini and the Williams F1, one of the world’s leading Formula One racing teams.

Weingrow Partners, a London-based private investment company that oversees the project, held a press conference in Seoul Tuesday to announce the global project whose completion is scheduled by 2016.

The company said up to $1 billion could be poured into the whole project, with negotiations still underway to attract strategic partners from luxury and lifestyle industries and other investors.

The membership club will offer its exclusive members a rare opportunity to race the latest F1 and other road and racing cars provided by Williams 1 and Lamborghini. Other facilities will include advanced driving simulators, a high-tech training center and the nation’s first seven-star hotel.

“The rare combination of a supercar manufacturer and a F1 team is unprecedented and will enable us to provide an extraordinary experience and level of service to clients. We believe Incheon, Korea, is the ideal location of this unique project,” said Akis Stark, managing director of Weingrow.

Yeongjong Island, home to Incheon International Airport, some 70 kilometers west from Seoul, has already hosted BMW Group’s first racing center outside Germany and the United States, with its construction planning to start in March.

According to Weingrow, there are about 73,000 super-car owners in Northeast Asia. The company predicted more than half of the club members would come from China and Japan, while Koreans make up 10 percent of the total.
