[THE INVESTOR] LG CNS, the IT solutions unit of LG Group, is renewing its commitment to creating a smart firm complex in Saemangeum, North Jeolla Province, amid fierce resistance from farmers in the adjoining areas.

“It is true we are having problems in carrying out the project due to resistance from farmers’ group. But we have no plan to withdraw the project,” an LG CNS official was quoted as saying by a local news outlet on Aug. 10.

“We have not yet reached an agreement with farmers but will continue efforts to persuade them.”

In February, LG CNS submitted the business plan to the regional government with aims to create a large-scale smart farm complex, called Smart Biopark, on a 230,000 square-meter site in Saemangeum, the reclaimed tidal land on the southwest coast.

The company said it will invest a total of 380 billion won (US$350 million) together with UK-based logistics company Advance International Group into creating the complex, which will consist of an advanced greenhouse, plant factory, research center and other processing and distribution facilities. The company also plans to create a joint venture firm with the British partner to support traditional farms to adopt advanced systems.

Amid opposition from farmers, the company has pledged to offer opportunities to local farmhouses to join the project. The company also plans to export all farm products overseas.
