SK hynix, the world’s second-largest memory chipmaker, said Thursday its mobile DRAM products received certification from the Environment Ministry for their low-carbon footprint.

The low-carbon product certification is given to products that meet the government’s standards of carbon emissions generated during the production process.

SK hynix said it lowered the carbon emissions by reducing the steam usage through the optimization of the heating, ventilation and air conditioning system. The amount of carbon emissions of the certified products, the 20-nano 4GB LPDDR2 and LPDDR3, are 21 percent and 9 percent lower, respectively, than that of the current 30-nano 4GB LPDDR2.

“This certification is meaningful for SK hynix as its low-carbon products expanded to mobile DRAM apart from the current NAND flash memory and DRAM for computers and servers,” said Kim Young-seo, head of SK hynix’s environment safety team.

SK hynix obtained the Environmental Declaration of Products for its 20-nano 4GB DDR3 DRAM products by the Environment of Ministry last October. The company reduced the amount of carbon emissions by 44.8 percent, compared to that of the 30-nano 2GB DDR3.

“We plan to release our green management information to the public through sustainable management reports,” an SK hynix official said.
