국내 온라인게임 ‘아키에이지’가 오는 주말 성공을 위한 하나의 전환점을 맞을 것으로 보인다.
개발사 엑스엘게임즈는 지난 12월 21일부터 국내 편의점 체인을 통해 클라이언트 설치 DVD, 게임 BGM이 담긴 OST CD와 함께 10일 무료이용권이 담긴 ‘스마트패키지’를 출시했다.
개당 3천9백원에 판매된 이 패키지는 2013년 최대의 블록버스터 타이틀로 손꼽히는 아키에이지를 기다려온 국내 게임 이용자들로부터 큰 호응을 얻었다. 패키지 발매 당일 서울 시내 편의점 일부에서는 재고 품귀현상까지 빚어졌다.
오는 금요일이 지난 16일 정식 유료서비스를 개시한 아키에이지 출시의 10일째가 되기 때문에 ‘스마트패키지’의 10일 무료 쿠폰을 이용해 그 동안 정식 서비스를 플레이 해 온 게이머들은 PC방이나 정액, 정량 요금에 추가 비용을 지불하며 계속 게임을 할 것인지를 오는 주말에 즈음하여 결정해야 하는 상황이 된 것.
서울의 한 20대 대학생은 “지난 17일부터 10일 쿠폰을 등록해 게임을 했지만 아직 유료 계정을 등록할 지는 결정하지 못했다,”며 “PC방에서 좀 더 해볼 계획이다”라고 밝혔다.
유료 서비스 이후에도 순조롭게 인기를 구가하고 있는 것으로 평가 받고 있는 아키에이지도 다른 MMORPG들과 마찬가지로 게임 시스템을 악용하는 일부 이용자들에 홍역을 앓고 있다.
국내 온라인 커뮤니티 디시인사이드와 인벤에는 다수의 게임 이용자들이 게임 내 귀중한 자원들을 자동으로 채취하는 이른다 ‘오토’ 프로그램을 사용하는 불법 이용자들의 수준이 도를 넘어서고 있다며 비판적인 시각을 드러냈다.
엑스엘게임즈에서는 23일 공식 홈페이지를 통해 불법 프로그램을 이용해 이익을 챙긴 약 2만2천여 개의 계정을 적발해 영구차단 조치를 했다고 밝히며 앞으로 더 나은 게임 환경을 조성하기 위해 노력할 계획이라고 약속했다.

XLGAMES, developer of “ArcheAge,” released a game installation package called “Smart Package” through local convenience stores on Dec. 21. The package included game client installation DVDs, the game’s original soundtrack and a 10-day free play coupon.
The package, which costs 3,900 won, was popular with customers who were waiting for one of the most anticipated blockbuster titles of 2013. On the day of its release, the package sold out in several convenient stores in central Seoul.
Since Friday is the 10th day of the paid subscription service, players who have enjoyed using the 10-day coupon starting on the release date will have to decide whether to pay for the game or quit.
“I have played the game using the 10-day coupon since Jan. 17, and I still can’t decide if I want to purchase a paid subscription,” college student Nam Hyun-woo said. “I’m thinking of playing it more in PC rooms.”
“ArcheAge,” however, is still fighting against illegal players who exploit holes in the game system. Many gamers posted criticism on local online communities, including DCinside and Inven, saying that the use of illegal programs that allow users to automatically collect valuable in-game resources is reaching a serious level.
XLGAMES announced Wednesday through its official website that it cracked down on some 22,000 accounts that made wrongful profits by using illegal programs. The developer also promised gamers to step up efforts to secure a better game environment.
