독거노인들의 고독사가 잇따라 대책 시급

독거노인들의 고독사가 증가함에 따라 정부차원의 대책이 시급하다.

전남의 경우 65세 이상 노인 35만 6천349명 가운데 32.2%인 11만 4천649명이 혼자 사는 것으로 조사됐다. 즉 노인 3명 중 1명꼴로 독거노인인 셈이다.

14일 전남 순천경찰서에 따르면 13일 낮 12시 40분경 순천시 주암면 한 조립식 주택 방 안에서 A(89•여)씨가 숨진 채 발견됐다. A씨는 저온 상태로 틀어진 전기장판 위에 누워 숨져 있었다. 경찰은 체온 저하와 노환 등으로 숨져 3~4일이 지나고 나서 발견된 것으로 보고 있다. A씨는 월 9만 5천여 원의 기초 노령 연금을 받았으나 자녀 수입 탓에 기초생활 수급 대상에는 선정되지 않았다고 순천시 관계자는 전했다.

지난 11일 오후 10시 50분경 광주 남구 모 아파트 욕실에서 B(69•여)씨가 숨져 있는 것을 딸이 발견했다. 고혈압 증세를 보인 B씨는 3일 전에 남편의 제사를 치르고 연락이 끊긴 것으로 알려졌다.

혼자 사는 노인이 늘면서 고독사도 늘고 있지만 자치단체 등은 재정과 인력의 한계를 이유로 근본적인 대책을 내놓지 못하고 있다. 더욱이 상당수는 고혈압, 치매 등 질환을 갖고 있어 고독사의 위험에 노출된 실정이다.

전남도의 한 관계자는 "말벗 돼주기나 빨래 등 돌봄 서비스에 5천여 명을 투입 해 복지 사각을 메우려고 노력하고 있지만 도움이 필요한 곳이 워낙 많다"며 "현장의 관심만으로는 부족한 부분도 있는 만큼 국가 차원의 대책이 필요한 것 같다"고 말했다. (코리아헤럴드)

The death among senior citizens living alone is increasing and governmental organization’s fundamental measures to cut the figures are in demand.

It has been reported that 114,649 senior citizens among 356,349 senior citizens over 65 years old live alone in South Jeolla Province. In other words, one out of three elders is currently living alone.

A police officer from Suncheon police department found an unidentified 89-year-old woman’s body dead in an electric pad in her modular home room. The police assume that the woman died from exposure and old age about three to four days ago, considering the condition of the body. It has been revealed that the woman lived off of a 95,000-won ($90) old-age pension and wasn’t qualified for basic living security because of her child’s income.

Another unnamed 69-year-old was found dead at an apartment in Gwangju by her daughter on the 11th. The daughter said her mother had high blood pressure and couldn’t contact her after her dad’s memorial ceremony on the 8th.

Most of the elders that live alone have hypertension and dementia, leaving them with risk of dying alone.

“We are trying to allocate about five thousand volunteers to help the senior citizens with housework and to visit them on a regular basis, but this kind of attention is not enough. The government needs to step up efforts to curb the death rates among senior citizens that live alone,” an official from South Jeolla Province said.
