A new labor umbrella group submitted documents to register with the Labor Ministry on Wednesday, officials at the ministry and the labor group said.

“The ministry will review its constitution and other papers for any violation of labor rules. The new group will be given the green light within three days, if no problems are found,” a ministry official said.

The Korea Trade Unions Confederation was launched in a ceremony in Daejeon on Tuesday, becoming the nation’s third umbrella group to represent 100 trade unions of 30,000 members.

The existing two are the Federation of Korea Trade Unions and the Korea Confederation of Trade Unions. The FKTU is the largest with 2,500 unions and 740,000 workers, while the KCTU has 550 unions and 580,000 workers as its members.

Led by Seoul Metro union leader Jung Yeon-soo, the new group vows to bring more benefits to workers through a pragmatic line. It has criticized the two larger bodies for their overly politicized and militant activities.
