A Swedish man was arrested after attempting to set up a nuclear reactor at home and test if he can split atoms in his kitchen, according to the Telegraph.
Richard Handl, 31, had tried for months to conduct such experiments at home, allegedly as a hobby, keeping records of them on a blog.
When he realized his experiments might not be legal, he sent a question to Sweden’s Radiation Authority, which sent the police immediately.
Handl reported to the police that he possesses the radioactive elements radium, americium and uranium in his apartment in southern Sweden.
Although the police did not detect dangerous levels of radiation at his home, he was arrested on charges of unauthorized possession of nuclear material.
“I have always been interested in physics and chemistry. I just wanted to see if it’s possible to split atoms at home,” said Handl, who now faces fines or maximum two years in prison when convicted.
