Lee says inter-Korean summit still possible

South Korean President Lee Myung-bak said Tuesday that North Korea has a "good opportunity" to break its diplomatic isolation through inter-Korean talks and the six-party negotiations on its nuclear program, but it should first avert the course of military brinkmanship.

"(I) can hold a summit (with the North Korean leader) if necessary," Lee said in a televised talk show. "For North Korea, now is a good opportunity to show a change in its attitude."

   He was responding to regional security conditions especially after a landmark summit between U.S. President Barack Obama and his Chinese counterpart Hu Jintao last month.

   Lee's comments were his first direct response to Pyongyang's recent peace overtures that followed years of threats and provocations. The North recently proposed defense ministerial talks with the South. The two sides are expected to hold a working-level meeting next week to discuss whether to hold the high-level talks.

Korea's) seriousness (about talks)," Lee said. "If (North Korea) seeks sincere dialogue, rather than military provocations, we can have dialogue, and resume economic exchanges and talks about the six-way talks."

    (서울=연합뉴스) 추승호 기자 = 이명박 대통령은 1일 "6자회담이든, 남북회담이 든 북한이 자세를 바꿔야 한다"며 "바뀌어야 성과를 낼 수 있다"고 말했다.

    이 대통령은 이날 오전 청와대 본관에서 진행된 `대통령과의 대화, 2011 대한민 국은'이란 제목의 신년 방송 좌담회에서 이같이 말하고 "한반도의 평화와 공동번영 을 위하려면 (남북간에) 정말 진지하고 진정한 토론을 해야 한다"고 밝혔다.

    남북대화와 관련해서는 "그런 것(도발)은 없었던 양 각계각층 대화를 하자고 하 니까 진정성이 있느냐. 그럼에도 실무진 대화를 시작하고 진정성을 보려고 한다"며 "필요하면 (남북)정상회담도 할 수 있다. (북한이) 책임을 보여야 한다"고 강조했다 .

    이 대통령은 "(북한의) 도발에는 강력한 대응을 하는 게 오히려 도발을 줄이는 것"이라며 "도발 걱정해서 참고, 참고 했는데 여러 상황을 봐서 북한도 이제는 다른 생각하지 않겠느냐. 도발만 가지고 안되겠다 생각하지 않겠느냐"고 말했다.

    한중관계와 관련, 이 대통령은 "한미관계가 강할 수록 한중관계에도 도움이 된 다. 그런 견해를 갖고 있다"며 "한미관계가 전쟁을 억제하려는 협력이지, 한중관계 에 해가 되는 게 아니다"라고 밝혔다.
