이번 주에도 시사적인 내용을 말할 때 도움이 될 영어다운 표현들을 보겠습니다. 저희 책 『나는 더 영어답게 말하고 싶다 시사이슈 편』에서 뽑은 표현들입니다.  

<부정부패>

A: The age-old practice of companies receiving special treatment, in a quid pro quo, for giving funds to politicians still exists.

B: Those old practices really seem to die hard.

A: 기업이 정치권에 돈을 제공하고 대가로 특혜를 받는 악습이 아직도 남아 있어.

B: 오랜 악습은 정말 사라지기 힘든 것 같아.

SITUATION 대가로 어떤 것을 주거나 받는다고 할 때

평범하게 He received special treatment in exchange for giving funds to politicians.

영어답게 He received special treatment, in a quid pro quo, for giving funds to politicians.

quid pro quo는 something for something else를 의미하는 라틴어 표현입니다. 조금 어려워 보이는 표현이지만 대가로 뭔가를 받는다고 할 때 잘 등장합니다. 특히 기업이 권력에게 돈을 주는 대가로 특혜를 받는다고 할 때 효과적으로 활용할 수 있습니다.

<정치, 외교>

A: Our next president should conduct the difficult task of balancing on the tightrope between the U.S. and China.

B: Just the thought of it makes it sound difficult.

A: 다음 대통령은 미국과 중국 사이에서 줄타기를 하는 어려운 업무를 수행해야만 해.

B: 생각만 해도 어려운 일일 것 같네.

SITUATION 힘들게 균형을 잡아 나간다고 할 때

평범하게 Our next president should keep a balance between the U.S. and China.

영어답게 Our next president should balance on the tightrope between the U.S. and China.

tightrope은 줄타기를 말합니다. 힘들게 균형을 잡아 나가는 모습을 외줄타기에 빗대어 말할 수 있죠. 미국과 중국 사이에서 균형을 잡아 나가야 하는 상황을 설명할 때도 적절합니다.

<사회>

A: Hours and hours of playing violent video games can make you desensitized to violence.

B: Playing violent games as an adult, I also find myself becoming numb to violence. So, how much more severe would it be for children?

A: 오랜 시간 동안 폭력적인 비디오 게임을 하면 폭력에 둔감해질 수 있어.

B: 성인인 내가 폭력적인 게임을 해 봐도 폭력에 둔감해지는 걸 알겠어. 그러니 아이들에게는 얼마나 영향이 심각하겠어?

SITUATION 폭력에 둔감해진다고 할 때

평범하게 Video games can make you numb to violence.

영어답게 Video games can make you desensitized to violence.

de-는 ‘박탈’을 의미하는 접두사입니다. deforestation(삼림 파괴), debugging(버그 수정) 등이 익숙하죠. desensitize는 sense를 잃게 만든다, 즉 어떤 것에 대해 둔감해지게 만든다는 뜻입니다. 게임의 폭력성에 길들여져 결국 폭력에 둔감해진다는 말을 desensitized to violence라고 표현할 수 있죠.

A: Millions of Koreans are glued to their smartphone screens all day, every day.

B: Some are so engrossed in their phones even while walking on the street. That can be very dangerous.

A: 하루 종일 1년 365일 스마트폰 스크린에 붙어있다시피 하는 한국인들이 수백만 명은 돼.

B: 어떤 사람들은 길을 걸을 때조차 스마트폰에 빠져 있어. 그건 아주 위험한 짓인데.

SITUATION 스마트폰을 계속 들여다본다고 할 때

평범하게 Millions of Koreans spend so many hours watching their smartphone screens.

영어답게 Millions of Koreans are glued to their smartphone screens.

glue는 접착제를 말합니다. be glued to ~라고 하면 ‘접착제를 발라 놓은 듯 ~에 붙어 있다’는 뜻입니다. 컴퓨터 모니터나 스마트기기의 스크린을 계속 들여다보는 모습을 표현할 때 잘 등장합니다.

A: It’s a serious problem that children can develop symptoms of depression and withdrawal from smartphone overuse.

B: That’s why I try to limit my daughter's hours on hers, but she always wants more.

A: 아이들이 스마트폰 과다 사용으로 우울증이나 금단 증상을 일으키는데, 심각한 문제야.

B: 그래서 우리 딸아이의 사용 시간을 제한하려고 하는데, 항상 더 하려고 하더라고.

SITUATION 스마트폰 금단 현상을 보인다고 할 때

평범하게 Children can find difficulty quitting using smartphone.

영어답게 Children can develop withdrawal symptoms from smartphone overuse.

withdraw의 기본 뜻은 ‘물러나다’입니다. 명사형은 withdrawal인데, ‘금단현상’을 표현하기도 합니다. 중독되어 있던 뭔가를 끊었을 때 다시 그 중독으로 돌아가고 싶은 고통을 말하죠. 스마트폰 사용 중단으로 인한 금단현상도 withdrawal이라고 할 수 있습니다.
