Learning a foreign language can be intimidating. If you glance at a book or watch an American movie the flood of new words might seem impossible to understand at first, but it’s not. Think of learning English as building a house. It needs to be done brick by brick, word by word. At first it may feel frustrating to not understand full sentences, but if you learn vocabulary and start recognizing and understanding words within those sentences, then you’re already on your way to understanding English.

(외국어를 배우는 것은 두려운 일이다. 책을 보거나 미국 영화를 보면 새로운 단어의 홍수가 처음에는 이해하기 어려워 보일 수 있지만 그렇지 않다. 영어를 배우는 것을 집을 짓는다고 생각하자. 그것은 벽돌을 하나하나 올리듯이 한 단어 한 단어를 쌓는 작업을 수행해야 한다. 처음에는 전체 문장을 이해하지 못하는 것이 절망감을 느낄 수 있지만, 어휘를 배우고 해당 문장 안애서 단어를 인식하고 이해하기 시작한다면 이미 영어를 이해하는 단계에 있는 것이다.)

A few new vocabulary words every day will help start to build your language house, but make sure that you revisit those words so that you remember them. Then you can start to challenge yourself with easy to understand English - it could be song lyrics, poems, children’s short stories or picture books. These all have short sentences that can easily be broken down and understood. It feels amazing when you understand a whole song or short story!

(매일 새로운 단어 몇 개씩 공부하는 것이 여러분의 단어의 집을 구축하는 데 도움이 될 것이지만, 기억할 수 있도록 해당 단어를 다시 방문해야 한다. 그런 다음 이해하기 쉬운 영어를 당신 스스로 도전해 볼 수 있다. 그것은 노래 가사, 시, 동화, 그림책 등이 될 수 있다. 이들은 모두 쉽게 분해하고 이해할 수 있는 짧은 문장을 가지고 있다. 전체 노래나 단편을 이해할 때 정말 기분이 좋다!)

Now you have the foundations of your language house and you can attempt more complex English. Maybe you have a favorite movie or tv star. Why not start to watch their movies or dramas? Become familiar with your star’s voice and pronunciation. Use Korean subtitles first and then switch to English subtitles, so you can start to understand their dialogue. Language learning becomes much easier if it is connected to something we are interested in, so focusing on someone you like - Tom Cruise or Keira Knightley for example - can help keep you enthusiastic about learning.

You might also have a favorite author. You can read the English version of one of their books with the Korean translation alongside to help you out. Don’t focus on understanding everything the first time and take things slow. Maybe you can aim for a paragraph a day (or a whole page if you’re brave!). Try to become familiar with the rhythm and flow of the language and add new words and expressions to your vocabulary. When you revisit the paragraphs you have read, you can start to break down the sentences in detail. Take your time and don’t pressure yourself. Build that house brick by brick.

As the days and weeks go by, your language house will continue to build itself. The more you revisit and revise, the stronger the house will be. And yes, it may not be perfect (we all make mistakes), but it will make you feel more comfortable when speaking, writing, reading or listening to English!

Where to start with learning English….. I’m sure you’ve had this problem with many things that seem to be more of a hassle than a hobby; weight loss, healthy eating, studying for a qualification and all manner of things that don’t involve something you are itching to do for fun. And therein lies the answer; you have got to make anything you learn as fun as possible!

(영어 공부는 어디서부터 시작해야 할까요? .... 여러분은 다음과 같은 것들보다 더 번거로운 것처럼 보이는 많은 것들로 이 문제를 겪었을 것이다. 즉, 취미, 체중 감량, 건강한 식생활, 자격을 위한 공부, 그리고 재미로 하고 싶은 가려운 일과 관련이 없는 모든 것들 보다 더. 그리고 거기에 답이 있다. 배우는 모든 것을 가능한 한 재미있게 만들어야 한다!

When it comes to English, there is no shortage of resources, both free and paid for. And linking your study to your to whatever it is you truly love can be a godsend. For instance, loving football, I was drawn to the Korean national team and learned the pronunciations of the player’s names when I was learning Korean in my youth. For you it could be a movie or drama that you fell for, a podcast series about a topic you are interested in or a youtube channel diving deep into a hobby that you are crazy about. 

(영어의 경우 무료와 유료 모두 리소스가 무궁무진하다. 그리고 당신의 공부를 무엇이건 당신이 진정으로 사랑하는 것에 연결하이 것은 신의 선물이 될 수 있다. 예를 들어 축구를 좋아해서 나는 한국 대표팀에 끌렸고 어렸을 때 한국어를 배울 때 선수 이름의 발음을 배웠다. 당신에게 그것은 좋아하는 영화나 드라마, 관심 있는 주제에 대한 팟캐스트 시리즈 또는 열광하는 취미에 깊이 빠져들게 하는 YouTube 채널이 될 수 있다.)

If you can link your passion with your learning, the latter becomes infinitely more approachable and you’ll want to learn at every opportunity. So don’t hesitate and debate how to get started. Do what you love AND study English!

(열정을 학습과 연결할 수 있다면 학습은 훨씬 더 쉽게 접근할 수 있고 기회가 있을 때마다 배우고 싶어할 것이다. 그러니 주저하거나 논의 하지 말자. 좋아하는 일을 하면서 동시에 영어를 공부하자!

PS. The same goes for British English enthusiasts now. There may have been a shortage of exposure in the past, but thanks to social media and streaming services there are so many choices. Podcasts with transcripts are some of my personal favorites.
