Firefighters on Thursday continued to put out the remaining flames of a forest fire that broke out in Jeongseon, Gangwon Province, on Wednesday evening.

The regional forest service said most of the fire was extinguished by around 10:39 a.m. Thursday after burning for around 15 hours. The fire started at around 7:18 p.m. Wednesday at the seventh ridge of Baekseoksan, gradually spreading to the nearby areas overnight.

The fire burned through 2 hectares of forest area, with firefighters experiencing difficulties in containing the blaze due to the rugged terrain and dry atmosphere.

No one has been reported injured.

More than 190 firefighters and seven helicopters from the forestry authority and the fire department were mobilized to the scene.

As of 3 p.m. Thursday, smoke continued to rise from the forest as firefighters continued to battle small flames burning on thick layers of twigs and leaves in the forest.

The authorities said they have yet to find evidence to determine the cause of the fire and will start investigating after the remaining flames have been put out.
