Six-carriage trains have begun to run on Seoul Subway Line No. 9, operating more frequently starting Monday, amid complaints over crowdedness on the line during rush hour.

Previously, some trains had four carriages and others six, which was a source of confusion for passengers. The number of rail services on Line No. 9 will increase from 37 a day to 40, according to the Seoul Metropolitan Government.

By employing six-carriage trains on all services, the crowd was expected to decrease by 19 percent on express trains and by 36 percent on standard trains, according to the municipality’s estimate.

Seoul Metro Line 9 Corp. operates Subway Line No. 9 between Gaehwa Station and Sinonhyeon Station. The rest of the line, Sinonhyeon Station to Jamsil Sports Compex Station, is run by Seoul Metro.

The city government is also considering expanding six-carriage trains that connect Seoul with other surrounding cities in the coming years, it said.
