Seoul Mayor Park Won-soon on Saturday solicited the UN climate agency's support for his plan to create an international organization to jointly tackle air pollution.

Park met with Patricia Espinosa, executive secretary of the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change, in Bonn, Germany, during his visit to attend the UN Climate Conference.

Seoul is a member of a Northeast Asian forum to improve air quality involving 13 regional cities including Beijing, Tokyo and Ulaanbaatar. Park seeks to transform the network, launched in 2010, into an internationally binding body.

"Air quality is as important an issue as climate change. Seoul is affected heavily by particulate matters flying from China and this shows the importance of cooperation among cities across national borders," Park was quoted by Seoul city officials as saying during the meeting.

Espinosa agreed to the need for the international community to do more to address air pollution and expressed support for Seoul's efforts to promote global cooperation, they said. (Yonhap)
