Moon, Xi to hold bilateral summit, normalize ties soured by THAAD

DANANG, Vietnam -- South Korean President Moon Jae-in and Chinese President Xi Jinping will hold their first meeting in four months this week in Danang, Vietnam, on the sidelines of the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation summit, South Korean officials said Friday.

During the meeting set for Saturday, the two leaders are expected to discuss North Korea's nuclear threats and ways to restore bilateral ties long estranged by the deployment of a US missile defense system in South Korea.

It will be their second bilateral meeting since the Moon took office in May. They first met in Berlin in July before they headed to Hamburg for a Group of 20 summit.

It comes after the countries reached an agreement on Oct. 31 to put their bilateral relationship back on track ending months of dispute over Seoul's hosting of the THAAD US missile defense system.

Beijing sharply protested the deployment and took apparent economic retaliatory measures against South Korea, such as a ban on large group tours by Chinese tourists, though it has never admitted to doing so. (Yonhap)
