Korea’s first-ever multicultural library

On the second floor of an old building in Dongdaemun-gu, eastern Seoul, children sit scattered around the floor of a small library, reading. Behind them are walls of bookshelves filled with colorful books. In the next room, others play board games, while in the third room a small group of children intently watch volunteer teachers instructing them how to make creative objects out of large board papers using scissors and glue.

“I come here every day after school. I usually read books or play with friends here,” said a 9-year-old surnamed Choi. For him, the small library has become his second home after school.

While this cozy retreat for children may be common at other libraries, there is something unique about this one. It is the country’s first-ever “multicultural” library.

The 166-square-meter private library Modoo, opened in 2008 by regional civic group Purun People, offers more than 13,000 children’s books. Of them, about 8,000 are in languages from 20 other countries, the largest such collection in the country. They include books from China, Japan, Russia, Mongolia, Vietnam, Bangladesh and others, according to Purun People.

The library attracts about 1,500 visitors a month on average, mostly children. Of them, about 30 to 40 percent are foreigners or multicultural.

Modoo has been more than just a library for both neighborhood residents and multicultural families in the city, as it has served as a place to hang out, relax and feel at home.

“This space is where Korean and multicultural mothers connect with each other and mingle. Their cultural distances gradually narrow by having a place to interact with each other,” library director Moon Jong-seok told The Korea Herald.

“My favorite comment from visitors is that they see no racial barriers in the library.”

The library runs various programs, such as free Korean language courses for foreign mothers and book-reading classes for children, with the help of about 50 volunteers. Native mothers or foreign volunteers read books written in their language. Volunteers also visit multicultural families to introduce the library’s free programs.

Since 2009, it has also hosted a fairy tale storytelling contest where participants tell tales in their mother tongue every year so that Korean and multicultural families can share their respective cultures.



우리나라 최초의 다문화 도서관



서울 동대문구의 한 오래된 건물의 2층에 있는 작은 도서관 바닥에 어린이들이 흩어져 앉아 책을 읽고 있다. 그들 뒤에는 다채로운 책들로 채워진 책장들이 벽에 붙어 있다. 옆 방에서는 다른 아이들이 보드 게임을 하고 있고 세 번째 방에서는 작은 무리의 어린이들이 가위와 풀을 이용해 커다란 판지를 자르고 붙여 창작물을 만드는 방법을 가르치는 자원봉사 선생님들의 말씀을 열심히 듣고 있다.

9살 최군은 “방과 후 매일 이 곳에 와요. 여기서 보통 책을 읽거나 친구들하고 놀아요”라고 말했다. 최군에게 이 곳의 작은 도서관은 방과 후 들르는 제2의 집이나 다름없었다.

어린이들을 위한 이처럼 아늑하고 조용한 공간은 다른 도서관에서도 흔히 볼 수 있을 지 모르지만 이 곳에는 독특한 뭔가가 있다. 이 곳은 바로 우리 나라 역사상 최초의 ‘다문화’ 도서관인 것이다.

지역시민단체인 푸른사람들이 지난 2008년 문을 연 166평방미터의 사설도서관 모두는 1만 3,000여권의 어린이 도서를 제공한다. 이 중 8,000여권은 우리 말이 아닌 20개국으로부터 그 나라 언어로 된 책을 들여온 것으로 그런 도서를 소장한 규모로는 국내에서 가장 크다. 푸른사람들에 따르면 외국어 도서 중에는 중국, 일본, 러시아, 몽고, 베트남, 방글라데시 등 여러 나라로부터 들여온 책들이 포함돼 있다.
월평균 약 1,500명이 이 도서관을 방문하며 방문자 대부분은 어린이들이다. 이 중 약 30~40%는 외국인이거나 다문화가족 구성원이다.

모두는 편안하게 휴식하며 시간을 보내는 장소로 활용되기 때문에 인근 주민과 다문화가정이 같이 이용하는 도서관 이상의 역할을 한다.

모두도서관 문종석 관장은 코리아헤럴드에 “이 공간은 한국인 엄마와 다문화가정 엄마가 서로 연결하고 어울리는 곳입니다. 그들의 문화적 거리는 서로 교류하는 장소를 통해 점차 줄어듭니다”라고 말했다.

“이 곳을 방문한 사람들로부터 들었던 가장 기분 좋았던 평가는 이 도서관에는 인종간의 장벽이 전혀 없다는 말이었습니다.”

이 도서관은 자원봉사자 약 50명의 도움을 받아 외국인 엄마를 위한 무료 한글 강좌, 어린이에게 책을 읽어주는 교실 등 다양한 프로그램을 운영하고 있다. 외국에서 출생한 엄마들이나 외국인 자원봉사자들이 자기 나라 말로 쓰인 책들을 읽어준다. 자원봉사자들은 다문화가정을 방문해 도서관의 무료 프로그램들을 소개하기도 한다.

이 도서관은 지난 2009년부터 매년 동화 구연 대회를 개최하고 있는데 한국인가정과 다문화가정이 자국 문화를 함께 공유할 수 있도록 대회 참가자들은 모국어로 이야기를 한다.
