Shanghai’s Metro has posted a comment warning women that wearing revealing clothes can lead to sexual harassment, prompting strings of negative responses and protests, according to news reports.

The Chinese subway authority recently posted a picture of a woman wearing a see-through dress that revealed her underwear on the Chinese microblogging website Sina Weibo.

Under the photo it wrote, “It’s not surprising that women get harassed if they dress like this. It’s hard to avoid perverts. Girls, please cherish yourselves.”

The comment drew fierce reaction from women, who argued that it was sexually discriminating and they are being wrongly blamed for a problem that is common all around the world.

“The abuse would happen whatever we wear,” a young Chinese woman said.

“According to this (Shanghai Metro’s) logic, men can harass all women in swimming pools?” a microblog user pointed out.

Two women even carried out a rare subway protest on Sunday. They covered their face and body with black garments and carried around a sign that said ‘Yes to coolness, no to perversion.”

However, sentiments of these women were not shared by majority of the public. In an online poll that drew about 48,000 responses, nearly 70 percent agreed that women should dress conservatively.

"성추행 당한건 야하게 입어서" 발언 파문!

중국 상하이 지하철 당국 (상하에 메트로) 이 여성들에게 ‘야한 옷을 입으면 성추행 당할 수 있다’는 경고문을 게시해 파문이 일고 있다.

이 글이 공개되자 여성들은 ‘성차별적인 표현이며, 전세계에 공통적으로 존재하는 문제에 대한 책임을 부당하게 여성들에게 묻고 있다’며 반발하고 나섰다.

한 중국 여성은 “어떤 옷을 입던지 성추행은 일어나기 마련”이라고 말했고, 한 네티즌은 “그런 논리라면 수영장에서 수영복을 입은 여자들은 맘껏 성추행해도 된단 말인가”라고 지적했다.

지난 24일에는 이 사건을 두고 두 여성이 지하철에서 시위를 하는 일도 있었었다. 검은 복장을 입고 얼굴을 가린 여성들은 “시원함 찬성, 변태행위 반대”라는 피켓을 들고 지하철 역을 활보했다.

그러나 이러한 여성들의 행위는 대중들의 별다른 지지를 받지 못하는 것으로 드러났다. 최근 시나 웨이보에서 실시된 온라인 설문조사 결과, 설문에 응한 4만8천명 중 70%에 가까운 응답자가 여성들이 옷을 ‘보수적으로 입을 필요가 있다’는데 동의했다.
