British couple is calling for a ban against self-harming sites, after vicious comments from such sites pushed their daughter to take her own life, according to news reports.

Their daughter, 15-year-old Rosie Whitaker, was hit by a train on Monday in what authorities presume was a suicide. Whitakers believe the tragedy was triggered by websites that idealizes extremely skinny bodies, and degrades the looks of normal teenage girls like Rosie.

According to Rosie’s blog, the users of the website told her that she was “fat and ugly,” while some urged her to commit suicide. Few hours after scribbling startling words of apology, Rosie appears to have thrown herself in front of a train.

Her family said in a statement that she was deeply pressured by upcoming exams when she fell prey to malicious influences by the websites.

“We hope her tragic death serves as a warning to other impressionable youngsters and their parents that such sites pose grave risks,” they said.

British Transport Police said it would investigate the websites Rosie had visited.

충격을 받은 로지는 스스로의 블로그에 욕설과 사죄가 뒤섞인 글을 남긴지 불과 몇 시간 후 싸늘한 시체로 발견되었다.

그녀의 가족은 로지가 이러한 악의적인 사이트에 노출되었을 당시 시험 때문에 극심한 스트레스를 받고 있었다고 말했다.

그러면서 “로지의 비극적인 죽음이 이러한 (자해) 사이트가 가져올 수 있는 큰 위험에 대해 청소년들과 부모들이 경각심을 갖게 되는 계기가 되었으면 한다”라고 자해사이트 반대 캠페인을 벌이게 된 동기를 설명했다.

경찰은 로지가 방문한 웹사이트를 조사해 이 문제에 대해 심도 있게 다룰 것라고 밝혔다.
