Jeju Island has signed a memorandum of understanding with a prestigious U.S. private school to set up the school’s campus on the island.

Jeju Free International City Development Center (JDC), a state-supported organization, said in a press release that it had signed an MOU with St. Johnsbury Academy on Tuesday.

With its 170-year history, the school has produced a number of prominent alumni, including Calvin Coolidge, a former U.S. president.

The school offers 22 advanced placement courses, English as a second language programs, and other academic programs for students in grades 9-12.

Establishing international schools is part of a plan to make the island an educational hub in Asia.

JDC Chairman Byon Jong-il, who is now visiting the U.S., said he hopes to complete negotiations with other prestigious U.S. private schools.

North London Collegiate School and Korea International School opened their campuses on the island last year.

Jeju is planning to open more international schools including Branksome Hall Asia, a Canada-based school, which is scheduled to open in October
