A U.S. woman sued her son and accused him of swiping a $51 million lottery ticket from her, according to news reports.
The legal battle between 76-year-old Etta May Urquhart and her son Ronnie Orender is over the ownership of the ticket; Urguhart’s money bought the ticket but Orender signed for the winnings.
According to California state court, Urquhart was overcome with emotion when she found out she won, so she told Orender to sign the ticket for her. However, Orender signed the winning ticket in his own name.
After receiving the money, Orender went on a spending rampage, blowing millions of dollars on lavish houses, vehicles and gifts.
The lawsuit filed by Orender’s mother and his step father seeks compensatory damage of at least $32.3 million, the sum of the cash prize Orender claimed.

결국 엄마의 요청 직후 아들 올렌도는 대신 자신의 이름으로 당첨금 수령 사인을 했다. 이후 아들은 엄마에게 “당첨금으로 인해 주변의 관심과 압력이 커질 것” 이라며 “다른 사람들에게 아들을 위해 티켓을 샀다고 말하라,”고 한 것으로 알려졌다
그러나 일시불로 3230만 달러(약 370억원)를 받은 올렌도가 돈을 펑펑 쓰기 시작하자 문제가 생겼다. 아들은 230만 달러(약 26억원)짜리 주택을 4채나 구매하고 고급차를 10대나 구입했으며 지인들에게 선물처럼 돈을 뿌린 것으로 전해졌다.
어커트의 변호인은 “정신적인 보상 외에 아들 올렌도에게 당첨금 전액의 반환을 요구한다.”고 밝혔다. 올렌도가 챙긴 실수령액은 3천 2백만달러에 달한다.
