Acid attack victim returns after 86 surgeries to tell her story

The victim of a horrifying acid attack in Belgium returned after 86 operations to testify against the man who scalded her for ending their relationship.

Patricia Lefranc, 48, spoke on the first day of Richard Remes’s trial for attempted murder, accusing him of “turning me into a monster.”

Lefranc told the court that he had planned the sulphuric acid attack on December 1, 2009, two weeks after their breakup, when as soon as she got of a lift in the Molenbeek-Saint-Jean suburb he poured acid over her head and upper body, the Daily Mail reported.

Lefranc, who was moved to a nearby hospital by neighbors, lay in a coma for three months. She awaits more surguries to her face.

“I lost the sight in my left eye, and hearing in an ear -- my right ring finger was amputated. By the time I got to my eightieth operation, I stopped counting,” she said.

Remes has denied charges of attempting to maim her, saying that he had been unaware of the devastating effects of the sulphuric acid.

남친에게 황산테러 당해 86회 수술

헤어진 남자친구에게 황산테러를 당한 파트리샤 르프랑(Patricia Lefranc, 48) 씨가 12일(현지 시간) 벨기에 수도 브뤼셀에서 열린 이 사건 관련 공판에 참석했다.

르프랑 씨는 지난 2009년 자신이 청소부로 일하는 아파트에 살던 유부남 리처드 레메스 (Richard Remes, 57) 씨와 연인관계로 발전했다가 이후 불륜 관계를 끝낼 것을 요구하자 레메스 씨는 약 2주 후인 12월 1일 그녀의 얼굴에 황산 테러를 가했다.

“저를 괴물로 만들어놨어요. 마땅한 대가를 치러야 한다고 생각합니다.” 그녀가 재판장에서 밝혔다.

이 사건으로 르프랑 씨는 3주간 의식불명상태에 빠졌으며 한 쪽 눈이 실명되고 한쪽 귀의청각을 잃는 등의 심각한 부상을 입었다. 그녀는 총 86회 수술을 받았으며 앞으로 인공 코 이식수술을 기다리고 있다.

이에 대해 리처드 씨는 당시 황산의 위험성이 그렇게 큰 줄 몰랐다며 살인미수 혐의를 부인하고 있다.
