Third-sex hostesses ready for takeoff

Thai transsexuals were overjoyed as new airline P.C. Air yesterday took air hostess job applications from "third sex" candidates at Bangkok's Esplanade shopping mall.

Among the successful applicants was Miss Tiffany 2007 winner Thanyarat "Film" Jiraphatpakorn.

P.C. Air executive Peter Shan said the company had seen the potential of transsexuals to work as hostesses.

After passing the preliminary round, the transsexuals will undergo training along with female air-hostesses and will have a "third sex" name tag pinned to their uniform to avoid immigration issues, Shan explained.

The first batch of successful candidates consisted of 17 women, 10 men and three transsexuals.

Miss Tiffany 2007 winner Thanyarat, 23, said she was overjoyed to get the chance she had longed for.

"At first I thought they would just take applications but not actually recruit us, as happened at other places before," she said.

Another transsexual applicant, Panthakan Sri-ngern, 24, said she once applied for a hostess position at another airline but wasn't chosen. She said a friend who worked there later told her she was rejected because she was transsexual. She felt devastated by the discrimination.

Panthakan, who has a hospitality and tourism degree from Kasetsart University, said this time she hoped to succeed and was glad Thai society was now giving more opportunities to transsexuals.

泰항공사, 성전환자 여성 승무원으로 채용

태국 신생 항공사인 `P.C.Air'가 성전환자인 트랜스젠더를 여성 승무원으로 채용할 예정이어서 관심을 모으고 있다고 현지 언론 더 네이션이 25일 보도했다.

피터 샨 P.C.Air 사장은 "트랜스젠더들이 여성 승무원으로 활약할 가능성이 있는지 여부를 그동안 살펴왔다"면서 "최근 실시한 승무원 채용에서 트랜스젠더 3명의 지원서를 통과시켰다"고 밝혔다.

지원서가 통과된 성전환자 3명 중에는 트랜스젠더 미인대회인 태국 미스 티파니 대회에서 지난 2007년 우승한 경력을 보유한 탄야랏 지라팟파콘(23)이 포함돼 있다.

피터 사장은 "성전환자들은 다른 여성 승무원 지원자들과 함께 훈련을 받게될 것"이라면서 "이들은 최종적으로 채용이 확정되면 승무원복장에 `제3의 성적 이름표 '(third sex name tag)를 부착, 입국상의 혼란을 피할 것"이라고 말했다.

탄야랏은 "P.C.Air도 다른 회사들처럼 신청서만 받고 실제 채용에 나서지는 않을 것으로 생각했다"면서 "오랫동안 희망하던 기회를 갖게 돼 너무 기쁘다"고 말했다.

또다른 성전환자인 판타칸 스리응언(24)은 "다른 항공사에 여성 승무원으로 일하기 위해 지원한 적이 있지만 성전환자라는 이유로 채용이 되지 않았다"면서 "태국 사회가 성전환자들에게 더 많은 기회를 주는 것에 대해 감사의 뜻을 표한다"고 말했다.
